Fried Cinnamon Sugar Doughnuts

Serves 12 doughnuts

Ingredients

1/3 cup hot water

2 1/4 tsp or 1 envelope (8g) instant yeast

1/3 cup warm milk

3 tbsp granulated sugar

2 tbsp Longo's Essentials Country Churned Butter, melted

1 large Longo’s Enriched Coop Egg, lightly beaten

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups Longo's Organic All Purpose Flour

1 cup Longo's Organic Whole Grain Flour

6 cups Longo’s 100% Pure Canola Oil, for frying (approx.)

Topping

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tbsp Longo’s Ground Cinnamon

3 tbsp Longo's Essentials Country Churned Butter, melted

Directions

  • Pour hot water into large bowl and stir in yeast. Let stand for about 5 minutes or until it starts to become frothy. Whisk in milk, sugar and butter to combine. Add egg, vanilla and salt. Stir in both flours until ragged dough forms.
  • Turn dough out onto floured work surface and knead for about 5 minutes, sprinkling with additional flour if sticky, until soft smooth dough forms. Place dough into an oiled bowl; cover and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Cut dough into 12 pieces and roll each into a 9-inch flat oval or beaver tail shape.
  • Heat oil in large heavy-duty pot or deep fryer to about 350°F. Prick doughnut all over with fork on both sides. Cook doughnuts in batches for about 1 minute per side until golden. Remove to a baking sheet lined with paper towel then repeat with remaining dough.
  • Topping
  • Combine sugar and cinnamon in small bowl. Brush doughnut while still hot with butter then sprinkle cinnamon sugar all over.

A dash of advice

The oil should not come more than halfway up the side of the pot. Use a pot that is at least 10 or 12 inches in diameter to fit the size of the doughnuts. For another great topping idea, use Longo’s fruit spreads in various flavours like apricot, strawberry, raspberry or wild blueberry. Variations: Nutella Banana: Omit toppings. Spread Nutella over doughnut and top with sliced banana. Peanut Butter Chocolate: Omit toppings. Spread Longo’s Peanut Butter over doughnut and sprinkle with chocolate chips.
